How to choose a water filter pitcher
NSF 42 only certifies that a filter improves taste and odor by reducing chlorine. It says nothing about lead, PFAS, fluoride, or any health contaminant. Most popular pitchers (Brita, PUR) only carry NSF 42. If health protection matters, look for NSF 53 as a minimum — or NSF 53 + 244 for the broadest coverage.
A cheap pitcher with frequent filter replacements can cost more per year than a pricier pitcher with long-lasting filters. Brita’s frequent 40-gallon filter swaps keep it in the Budget tier for running costs. Berkey’s 3,000-gallon filter life keeps it in the Mid tier annually. The EPA’s 2024 drinking water standard set maximum limits for PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion. Most municipal water systems are still working toward compliance.
