Most water filters do not remove fluoride. Standard carbon filters - including Brita, PUR, and most pitcher filters - have no meaningful fluoride reduction. How to choose a fluoride filter

Homeowner - under-sink RO

If you own your home and can install under-sink hardware, a reverse osmosis system is the most effective and cost-efficient fluoride removal solution. APEC ROES-50, a Mid-tier system, is the best value. Waterdrop G3P600 (Premium tier) adds tankless convenience. Both remove 90-96% of fluoride.

Renter - pitcher

If you can't install under-sink hardware, the Clearly Filtered Pitcher is the only pitcher that removes fluoride. No drilling, no installation, portable. The trade-off vs RO: lower fluoride reduction rate and higher cost per gallon. But it's the best no-install fluoride removal option available.

Why carbon filters don't work for fluoride

Activated carbon removes contaminants through adsorption - contaminants stick to the carbon surface. Fluoride ions are small and negatively charged, and do not readily adsorb onto standard carbon. This is why Brita and PUR don't remove fluoride, regardless of how many filter stages they claim. Only RO membranes (physical exclusion) or specific activated alumina/bone char media remove fluoride effectively.

How much fluoride does RO remove?

NSF 58-certified RO systems typically remove 90-96% of fluoride. US municipal water is fluoridated at 0.7 mg/L (EPA recommendation). After RO, typical output is 0.03-0.07 mg/L - well below any health threshold. If your water is higher than 0.7 mg/L (some well water), test first and verify with a post-filter TDS/fluoride test kit.

Does Brita remove fluoride?
No. Standard Brita filters carry only NSF 42 certification, which covers chlorine taste and odor. Activated carbon - the media used in Brita - does not remove fluoride. This applies to Brita Standard, Brita Longlast+, PUR Basic, and most standard pitcher filters. The only pitcher that removes fluoride is Clearly Filtered.
Does boiling water remove fluoride?
No - and boiling actually concentrates fluoride by evaporating water while leaving fluoride behind. The only household methods that remove fluoride are reverse osmosis, distillation, and specific activated alumina or bone char filter media. Standard carbon filtration, UV, and boiling do not reduce fluoride.
Is fluoride in tap water dangerous?
At the levels used in US municipal water (0.7 mg/L), the CDC and EPA consider fluoridation safe and beneficial for dental health. The EPA's maximum contaminant level is 4 mg/L. Concerns about fluoride are more relevant for people on well water (which can have naturally elevated fluoride) or infants consuming formula made with fluoridated water. If you want to reduce fluoride exposure as a precaution, RO is the most effective method.
What NSF certification covers fluoride removal?
NSF 58 (for RO systems) is the primary certification that covers fluoride reduction. Some NSF 53-certified filters also test for fluoride, but not all - you need to check the specific contaminant list for each NSF 53 certification. Clearly Filtered's NSF 53 certification includes fluoride in its tested contaminant list. NSF 42 never covers fluoride.
Does a whole house filter remove fluoride?
Standard whole house carbon filters (SpringWell CF+, Aquasana Rhino) do not remove fluoride - they use activated carbon which is ineffective for fluoride. A whole house RO system would remove fluoride at every tap, but these are expensive and typically unnecessary for municipal water. The practical solution for most households is a point-of-use RO system (APEC ROES-50 or Waterdrop G3P600) at the kitchen tap.
