Our verdict

The Brita UltraMax is a well-made, affordable dispenser that does one thing well: improving chlorine taste and odor. Its NSF 42 certification confirms this. But NSF 42 is a taste certification - not a health certification. It does not remove PFAS, lead, fluoride, arsenic, or any health-effect contaminant. If you're buying a filter to protect your health, the Brita UltraMax with its standard filter is not the right tool. If you just want better-tasting tap water and your municipal supply is otherwise clean, it does that job adequately at a low price.

What NSF 42 actually certifies

The Brita UltraMax carries NSF 42 certification - the most basic NSF standard for water filters. NSF 42 certifies one thing: that a filter reduces chlorine taste and odor and aesthetic impurities. It says nothing about health-effect contaminants.

This is the most common source of confusion with Brita products. Brita's marketing emphasizes "cleaner, great-tasting water" - which is accurate for chlorine taste. But many consumers assume a water filter removes health contaminants like PFAS and lead. The NSF 42 certification does not test for or verify any of those.

Design and build quality

The Brita UltraMax is one of the best-designed pitchers at its price point. The 27-cup capacity is the largest in Brita's lineup - enough for a family of 4 in the fridge without constant refilling. The spigot dispenser design is practical: no lifting or pouring, just press and fill. BPA-free plastic construction is standard for Brita. The lid opens easily for refilling and the filter replacement indicator tracks usage automatically.

Build quality is adequate for the price. The plastic feels lighter than premium pitchers like Clearly Filtered but holds up well with daily use. The dispenser fits most standard refrigerator doors. Overall, from a design and usability standpoint, it's a good product - the limitation is entirely in what the filter is certified to remove, not in the physical design.

Filter performance - what the NSF data shows

The Brita Standard filter (included with UltraMax) is NSF 42 certified for chlorine reduction, taste, and odor. In independent taste tests, Brita consistently produces noticeably better-tasting water from heavily chlorinated municipal supplies. If your only concern is chlorine taste, it works.

The filter is rated for 40 gallons - roughly 2 months for a family of 4. However, many users replace filters less frequently than recommended, which reduces effectiveness even for chlorine reduction.

What the Brita Standard filter does not do: independent lab testing and NSF certification data confirm it provides no meaningful reduction of PFAS compounds, lead, fluoride, arsenic, nitrates, or pharmaceuticals. Activated carbon in the Brita Standard filter is optimized for chlorine adsorption, not for the broader contaminant removal that NSF 53 or NSF 58 systems provide.

Note on Brita Longlast+ filter: Brita does make a separate "Longlast+" filter (sold separately) that carries NSF 53 certification for lead reduction. This is a different product with different media. The standard filter included with the UltraMax does NOT carry NSF 53. If you want lead removal in a Brita dispenser, you must specifically purchase and use the Longlast+ filter - not the standard one shown on the box.

Who should buy the Brita UltraMax

The Brita UltraMax makes sense in a narrow set of situations:

Buy it if: your municipal water is tested clean for PFAS and lead, you just want to reduce chlorine taste, and budget is the primary concern. New homes with modern plumbing in cities with well-maintained water infrastructure are lower-risk situations where NSF 42 may be sufficient.

Don't buy it if: you live in an older home (built before 1986) with potential lead pipes, your area has known PFAS contamination, you want fluoride removal, or you're buying a filter for health protection rather than taste.
