A whole house cartridge system is sized for chemicals and taste, not for grit. On a well, or on a supply where rust and sand show up after mains work, the sediment arrives first and clogs the cartridges you actually paid for. A spin-down pre-filter in front of the system catches that grit in a transparent bowl you flush, so the expensive cartridges stop doing a job they are bad at.
