Renters and apartment dwellers can't install whole house filters or drill under the sink without landlord permission. But that doesn't mean settling for unfiltered tap water. The filters below require zero installation, zero drilling, and zero landlord approval - while still delivering NSF-certified contaminant removal.

How to choose an apartment water filter

Check your lease first

Some leases prohibit any modifications including under-sink filter installation. Others allow minor modifications with written permission. Always check before drilling or connecting to water supply lines. Pitcher and gravity filters like Clearly Filtered and Berkey require no modifications - safe for any rental situation.

Volume vs portability

The Clearly Filtered Pitcher holds about 10 cups of filtered water at a time - sufficient for drinking and cooking for 1-2 people. For families of 3-4, the Berkey's 2.25-gallon gravity tank is more practical. If you move frequently and travel, the Clearly Filtered pitcher is more compact and easier to transport.

Older apartment buildings

Apartments in buildings constructed before 1986 may have lead pipes or lead solder in the plumbing - even if the municipal supply is clean. If your building is older, NSF 53-certified lead removal (Clearly Filtered) is a priority. Ask your building manager for the last water quality test results.

Upfront vs running cost

Clearly Filtered is Budget tier both upfront and annually. Berkey is Mid tier upfront with a low running cost. APEC ROES-50 is Mid tier upfront and annually. For short-term rentals (under 1 year), Clearly Filtered has the lowest total cost. For long-term apartment living, Berkey's low running cost makes it cheaper over 3+ years.

FAQ

Can I install a water filter in an apartment?
It depends on your lease. Pitcher and gravity filters (Clearly Filtered, Berkey) require zero installation and are allowed in any rental. Faucet-mount filters connect to the faucet aerator without drilling. Under-sink filters and RO systems require drilling a hole in the sink and connecting to the water supply - this usually requires landlord permission. Always check your lease and get written approval before any plumbing modifications.
Is apartment tap water safe to drink?
Municipal tap water in the US is treated and regulated by the EPA - it meets legal safety standards at the treatment plant. However, water can pick up contaminants (lead, sediment, chlorine byproducts) as it travels through aging pipes to your tap, especially in older buildings. Your building is required to provide water quality information on request. If you're concerned, a NSF 53-certified filter like Clearly Filtered provides independently verified protection.
What's the difference between Clearly Filtered and Brita for apartments?
Both are pitchers that require no installation. The difference is certification: Brita Standard carries only NSF 42 (taste and odor - chlorine only). Clearly Filtered carries NSF 42, 53, and 244 - independently verifying removal of PFAS, lead, fluoride, and microbiological contaminants. Brita is cheaper upfront but provides no protection against health contaminants. For apartments in older buildings with potential lead pipes, Clearly Filtered's NSF 53 certification is meaningfully different.
Can I take my water filter when I move?
Yes - all three filters on this list are portable. Clearly Filtered and Berkey require no installation and move with you in 30 seconds. The APEC ROES-50 can be disconnected and removed from under the sink when you move - you'd patch the faucet hole or leave the dedicated faucet in place (most landlords consider this an improvement). Keep all original parts for reconnection at your next place.
