Why Brita doesn't remove PFAS
Brita filters are certified to NSF 42 only - which covers taste and odor, not PFAS or lead. Despite marketing claims, standard Brita pitcher filters are not certified to remove PFAS. Verified against the NSF International database.

What NSF certification do I need for PFAS removal?
NSF 53 (for carbon-based filters) or NSF 58 (for reverse osmosis systems). Both certify reduction of PFOA and PFOS. NSF 42 does not cover PFAS.
Does boiling water remove PFAS?
No. Boiling water actually concentrates PFAS because water evaporates but PFAS stays behind. Only filtration removes PFAS.
How do I know if my water has PFAS?
Check the EWG Tap Water Database or your utility's annual water quality report. Many US utilities now test for and report PFAS levels in drinking water.
What are the current EPA rules on PFAS in 2026?
The situation is in flux.
