Electric kettles without plastic: which parts touch the water, by the maker's own description

By Clean Water Adviser Editorial Team - Updated October 31, 2026 - 6 min read - From maker manuals, help pages and California disclosures

Plenty of kettle listings promise that no plastic touches the water. What a maker writes in its own documents can be more specific than that, or less. We read the product pages, manuals and help articles from Fellow, Cosori and OXO for four kettles, plus the California chemical disclosures where they exist, and wrote down what each one says about the parts the water touches. Where a maker says nothing, the table says so.

Short answer

Fellow gives the fullest description: a 304 stainless steel interior, a stainless steel underside to the lid, and silicone around the temperature probe and in the lid gasket. Fellow also says its kettles are not fully plastic-free. Cosori says the SE152 has a stainless steel interior with a plastic-free inner lid and filter. For the two glass kettles, the makers name the glass and the steel parts but not the lid.

What touches the water, kettle by kettle

Each cell is the maker's own description, read 29 October 2026. Sources are listed at the end of the page.

Both Cosori rows come from the image descriptions on Cosori's product pages, not from a written materials list or manual. We count them as the maker's statement; a spec sheet would be stronger evidence.

What "no plastic contact" usually leaves out

Water reaches more than the body. It also meets the underside of the lid, the gasket that seals it, the ring around the temperature probe, the filter in the spout and, on some kettles, a water-level window. The handle and the base stay dry, so plastic there is a separate question.

Of the three makers, only Fellow goes through those parts one by one, and only Fellow says plainly that its kettles still contain plastic: in parts of the lid, the base and the handle. It also answers the PFAS question directly. Fellow says all external kettle parts, including those that touch water, are PFAS-free, and that the only PFAS is in components of the control board inside the base.

California chemical disclosures

Since 2023, California law has required cookware makers to post on their website any chemicals from the state's designated list that they intentionally add to a handle or to a surface that touches food or drink (Health and Safety Code 109012). Kettles show up in these disclosures. The lists name chemicals; they are not a safety rating.

OXO lists the spout filter of the Cordless Glass Electric Kettle with chromium, iron, manganese and nickel, the elements of stainless steel. Cosori's disclosure has a kettle section that groups several models under one list of chemicals, so it cannot be read model by model. No kettle in that section lists PTFE, which Cosori does list for some of its other appliances.

If you also filter your water

Certification for what is in the water works per contaminant and belongs to the filter. For microplastics, see which filters have a listing that names them. If you would rather have filtered hot water from one machine, the Waterdrop M6H on our countertop water filters page dispenses it. We have not checked the materials of its hot water path, so it is not in the table above.

FAQ

Is a glass kettle plastic-free?
Not automatically. The body is glass, but the lid, the filter in the spout and the seals can be other materials. OXO names a borosilicate glass body and a stainless steel filter for its glass kettle, and does not say what the lid is made of. Cosori's glass kettle with an infuser has a stainless steel rim and infuser, and its page does not describe the underside of the lid.
Is silicone the same as plastic?
Fellow lists them separately: polypropylene for its plastic parts, silicone for the ring around the temperature probe and for the lid gasket. If you want neither near the water, ask the maker about both, because a "no plastic" label may not cover silicone.
Glass or stainless steel?
We found no certification for the parts that touch the water on any of these four kettles, so the useful comparison is the parts list. Glass lets you watch the water. In our table, the steel kettles have the fuller maker descriptions of the lid. Beyond that it comes down to what you like to look at and clean.
Does a kettle filter the water?
No. A kettle heats what you pour into it. Filtering is a separate step, and certification for it is per contaminant: see water filters for microplastics or our countertop water filters.
